Gender and Sexual Identity
“Sexuality affects all aspects of the human person in the unity of his body and soul…. Everyone, man and woman, should acknowledge and accept his sexual identity.” (CCC 2332-2333)
As Catholics, we believe and hold fast that there are only two genders, male and female and that marriage is only between one male and one female. Cultivating the virtue of chastity, “the successful integration of sexuality within the person and thus the inner unity of man in his bodily and spiritual being,” (CCC 2337) needs to be at the center of our discussion on this complex topic.
Anticipate
With the growing celebration of transgender and homosexual ideology in our culture, it is important to be prepared and educate yourself in the truth and beauty of human sexuality. Doing this will equip you to have timely conversations with your child when confronted with this subject in their interactions or when your child is exposed to it in the media or public sphere.
Accompany
If your child is exploring transgender ideology and/or homosexuality, it is important to first affirm them as your child and continue to give them love and affection. Explore our resources and join a support group to help guide you to respond to them from a Catholic perceptive. You need to be well informed and engage your child in charitable ways so that you can accompany them and reaffirm their God-given identity.
